According to the research completed by the American Gartner Group Co. LTD. , about forty percent projects failed in the north America. However, there are fewer expertises who both have the knowledge of IT and professional project management. There are only a very small percentage of successful projects, most of them completely failed.Over the past years, there have been a number of studies focusing on how to judge whether a project had been successful, but seldom attention had been paid on the factors which would influence the success of the project, and the local scholars had done less researches. This research is mainly focusing on how the critical success factors to influence the success of the information system development projects. And whether the influence is the same as the different projects or different lifecycles? This study examines three project diversity, including project size, project member diversity, technical complexity; five critical success factors, including project objective and bound, top management support, project plan and monitoring, project user involvement, project communications; and six success criteria, including time, cost, quality, information quality, information use, user satisfaction. This dissertation includes an overview of the project success research topic and a survey of scholarly literature, as well as hypotheses, data collection, data analysis, validation, conclusions and recommendations. In this study, we have found that five critical success factors including project objective and bound, top management support, project plan and monitoring, project user involvement, project communications would have significant impacts on the performance of the information system development projects. On the other words, that means we could gain success by controlling theses critical success factors. Furthermore, we also found that the factors have significant differences between the different projects. It is expected that the firms with information system development projects will gain business value from these findings.
