The Study On Relationship Between Economy And Environmental Carrying Capacity In Suzhou

Suzhou is located in the core area of the Yangtze River Delta, its economy has made great progress with the reform and opening up. From 1978 to 2009, the GDP and the added value of the three industries of Suzhou have grown rapidly. However, with the GDP growing at double-digit rates every year and the great success has been made in the economy, but the costs of resources and environment were increased greatly also. It's not perfect to research the relationship between economic growth and environmental carrying capacity in the process of economic development, improving urban environmental quality and expanding the city size.Hierarchy and vector analytical method was used in this research. Firstly, index system was established to assess the environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou. Then according to the index system of various levels, the environmental carrying quantity and environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou from 2000 to 2009 was estimated by vector analysis from low to high level. Finally, combined with the main economic indicators, fit out the relationship of the economy and environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou. The research conclusions are as follows:(1) From 2000 to 2009, environment carrying rate of Suzhou all fell in interval [94%, 97%], containing in strong state for many years. Overall, environmental carrying capacity caught in an extremely pessimistic dilemma.(2) With the economic growth of Suzhou, environmental carrying capacity will gradually decrease, then when it increases to a certain stage of economic development, environmental carrying capacity will increase. However, further economic development will lead to the reducing of environmental carrying capacity. From the simulation results, the environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou has improved.(3) Environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou will decrease with the increase of the share of the secondary industry in GDP.(4) The relationship between the ratio of the secondary and tertiary industry in GDP and the environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou is three times curve, and the curve has two inflexion points(x₁=1.76, x₂=1.91). Therefore, to improve the environmental carrying capacity of Suzhou, the ratio of the secondary and tertiary industry of GDP should be fell in interval [1.76,1.91].
