Synthesis process of the rare earth doped transparent laser ceramic powders is the prerequisite and key for preparation of the transparent laser ceramics. Currently, the study on preparation and the laser spectral performance about the pure ytterbium aluminum garnet(YbAG) and holmium-doped ytterbium aluminum garnet(Ho3+:YbAG) ceramic powders have not been reported interiorly.In this paper, the pure YbAG and Ho3+:YbAG laser ceramic powders were prepared by low-temperature combustion method, reaction mechanism and the major influencing factors were discussed. The structure and spectral properties of the powders were analysed by TG-DTA, XRD, infrared spectrum, absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, up-conversion fluorescence spectrum and other test means. The results show that the pure YbAG and Ho3+:YbAG laser ceramic powders can be obtained by low temperature combustion method at 900℃, powder structure and properties were affected by many factors such as the rare earth doped concentration of component, the type of combustion agent, the dosage of combustion agent, reaction time, calcination temperature and others. The optimum conditions are the holmium-doped concentration is 2%, the combustion agent is citric acid, the ratio of combustion agent and the metal nitrate is 5:6, the reaction time is 2h, the calcination temperature is 900℃.
