The synthesis of nonylphenol ethoxylate alkylalcohol sufisuccinates were carried out, and their critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension and emulsifying capacity to cyclohexane were determined. The results show that the optimum reaction temperatures for the syntheses of nonylphenol ethoxylate maleate (RCD), nonylphenol ethoxylate alkylalcohol maleate(RCS) and their sulfonate (RCS-H) were 85℃,110℃and 90℃, respectively. The esterification rate of RCS increased with the increase in the carbon chain of the alkylalcohols. The surface activity properties of RCS were better than those of RCD, but were not very significant. The novel Gemini surfactants were used in emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene. The conversion rate of the product, gel content, latex surface tension, membrane contact angle, water absorption and mechanical stability were determined. The synthesis of polyethylene glycol sufisuccinates were carried out suing polyethylene glycol (400,600 and 800), maleic anhydride, unsaturated alcohols (octanol, dodecanol, benzyl alcohol and cyclohexanol) and sodium bisulfite. The effects of reaction temperature and time were studied, and the critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension and emulsifying capacity to cyclohexane of the products were determined. The results showed that the surface properties of the the polyethylene glycol sufisuccinates were better than the nonylphenol ethoxylate sufisuccinates. The synthesis of polyethylene glycol sufisuccinates were used in emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene. The conversion rate of the product, gel content, latex surface tension, membrane contact angle, water absorption and mechanical stability were determined. The results showed that nonylphenol ethoxylate sufisuccinates can be replaced by the polyethylene glycol sufisuccinates in emulsion polymerization of butyl acrylate and styrene.
