High oil-absorbing resin is a novel self-swelling oil-absorbing material with a gel-type structure consisting of an elastic crosslinking three-dimensional network and interstitial space that don't dissolve in oil but swelled in oil. The excellently fast oil absorbing speed, large full oil swelling quantity, high oil retention rate make it vastly used in environment protection, oil seal material producing, etc. We have synthesized three type of oil-absorbing resins via different methods, which are oil-absorbent beads containingβ-cyclodextrin moieties, low cost high oil absorbent beads withα-styrene, photo responsive oil sorbers. The main work of this paper is as list:We synthesizedαβ-cyclodextrin derivative (β-CD-MA) by the reaction ofβ-cyclodextrin with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA),β-CD-MA thus-prepared was found to contain more than two vinyl groups on average, and hence can be used as cross-linking agent for the formation of polymeric networks. This hypothesis was proved to be viable, and interesting oil-absorbent beads were successfully prepared via s suspension polymerization. Hereinβ--CD-MA also played there-fold roles, namely, as co-monomer, as a cross-linking agent for the formation of cross-linked networks, and as a pore-forming agent. The novel beads synthesized via this method under the optimized conditions absorbed 55 times the dry weight in toluene,52 times in xylene,75 times in CHCl3, and 102 times in CCl4. Furthermore, such beads can efficiently absorb toluene floating on water. We also synthesized a low cost oil-absorbing beads via suspension polymerization. Herein AIBN was used to initiate the radical polymerization, DVB was used as crosslinking agent andα-styrene, styrene, stearyl acrylate as monomers.α-styrene is a monomer which bearing a methyl and prior to co-polymerize than homopolymerize. Introducingα-styrene into the oil-absorbing beads can optimize the interaction of macromolecular long-chain of oil-absorbing beads and improve the ability of oil absorbency. At last, Azo-benzene with vinyl (V1-AZO) was obtained via series of reactions of 4-aminostyrene and phenol, then photo responsive oil sorber was obtained by the copolymerization of V1-AZO, styrene and stearyl acrylate (DVB was used as crosslinking agent). The oil-swollen photo responsive oil sorber can exhaust oil spontaneously under specific wavelength UV light, and the exhaust ability was related to the amount of V1-AZO in the oil sorber.
