The transportation industry in China has presented a great-leap-forward momentum of development during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan Period, a period that the transportation industry is experiencing faster growth, better quality of development, more notable improvements in services than any period since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Meanwhile, the significance of transportation planning is highlighted and obtains widely recognition. The main contents of this dissertation include theoretical analyses and division problem study of traffic zone. The traffic zone division is one of the most important techniques for transportation planning, and has a profound effect on successful formulation of transportation planning. However, the domestic study on traffic zone was relatively rare in for a long time, thus making traffic zone an imperative task to be solved.Firstly, this dissertation introduces the relevant contents of transportation planning, then analyzing the relationship between transportation planning and traffic zone, and putting an emphasis on elaborating requirements by different planning methods for traffic zone. Since the traffic zone division is the most difficult in urban transportation planning, it becomes the research object of this dissertation. After establishing the research object, theoretical analyses for traffic zone are carried out, and the generation process of traffic zone as well as related problems are investigated in this dissertation, which mainly include the following aspects:â‘ .What is the specific purpose of generation of the traffic zone?â‘¡. What characteristics does the traffic zone possess?â‘¢. Inner trip and external trip. This dissertation analyzes such problems as the influencing factors on traffic zone division, division principle and so on, with the emphasis on presenting the problems of stratifying, region division and period division during traffic zone division. Thus the general train of thought for traffic zone division is formulated.Through confirming the division scheme for traffic zone, two problems are primarily investigated in this dissertation, which include how to determine the size and quantity of traffic zone and region merging and division. For determination process of size and quantity for traffic zone, the trip distance is firstly introduced as the supplementary means, and then the inner trip is used as the constrained condition to measure the traffic zone radius. Moreover, the area of the circle formed by the traffic zone radius is employed as the division area of traffic zone, with which the quantity of traffic zone can be figured out. In the study of region division and region merging, region division mainly discusses the data distribution problem during division process. And region merging employs the cluster method based on fuzzy equivalence relation, which is suitable for region merging but has tremendous computation complexity. In this dissertation, combing the specific example, the cluster method is implemented using the MATLAB software.Finally, using the traffic zone division in as the practical example has shown that the research results in this dissertation can be applied in the practical work and works with better effective.
