During the design of modern products, as the increase of products'function, their structures are much more complicated. So, may be it need to unite a number of units together to complete one product's design, and these units may be located in different locations. Thus, distributed and collaborative products design has an important significance. This dissertation researches the theory of distributed knowledge management systems to solve this problem in distributed collaborative design.Firstly, the united modeling of multi-domain and distributed knowledge. I research the basic theory of ontology. Then, with the use of the theory , based on the actual situation, I analysis and model the knowledge of products'design at two levels. And then, based on these models, the conclusions and the basic theory of ontology, I design an expression of knowledge, which has stronger ability of expression and more universal. At the end, I describe the knowledge in the terms of XML documents.Secondly, the research of reasoning system on the basis of the knowledge expression. According to the requirements of design, this dissertation uses the Unified Modeling Language—UML to model the reasoning process from three different levels. Then, based on these three models, I design the overall process of reasoning system. I study the reasoning algorithm which is suitable for the knowledge expression in this dissertation. In the design process, I design each specific module in the system combined with the knowledge of the specific form of expression, which includes concept reasoning module, rule reasoning module and method reasoning module.Finally, research of the theory of distributed system. I compare two common distributed control method, and then integrated their respective advantages, propose a distributed reasoning system's overall structure, which can perform the two structures'advantages. Then, I study the conflict resolution algorithms and scheme evaluation methods. I use the knowledge processing digestion in the conflict resolution; during the scheme evaluation methods, I define the conflict resolution function, and analyze its qualitative and quantitative characters, then I get its specific function expression, which can be used to quantify the degree of scheme's conflict.In this dissertation, I study the problem of complex products'distributed and collaborative design, and analysis this problem in three main aspects, which are not independent with each other. They are interrelated, as the reasoning system should be designed according to the expression of knowledge, and the design of expression of knowledge should concern the distributed situation. Ultimately, based on the background of products'collaborative design, I analysis the requirements and software overall structure, and then, I develop a system by using these three part of theory and in the case of the distributed collaborative design of a retarder to verify the theory which I propose.
