Gear set with small number of teeth is a kind of single stage transmission mechanism that can reach big gear ratio in small space. This paper mainly studied on the tooth profile design for gear sets with high load carrying capacity on the basis of involutes tooth profile. The main contents include the following:Based on the differential geometry, the principle of gear engagement knowledge, the geometric model and its mathematical model of the planar gear transmission are established. It provides theoretical basis for the geometry limits of the gear pair profile.The profile limited domain research is presented on the basis of strength theory and geometric topology. The minimum tooth profiles of the paired gears are determined on the basis of strength theory when the gear sets transmit the maximum torque. Then, the maximum tooth profiles of the paired gears are determined based on the theory of gear meshing. The space between the maximum tooth profiles and the minimum is the tooth profile limited domain, it will provided the visual approach to determine if the designed tooth profile is safe.According to the theory above, the characteristics and the parameter selection of the profile shifted involutes gear in two directions are analyzed. Then the design methods for gears with new kind of profiles are studied.
