Urbanization wave in China is in the ascendant with the worldwide spread of concerns about global climate change and sustainable development. In face of the pressures with population, resources and environmental by rapid urbanization, a compact, energy-saving, efficient and dynamic development model created by moderately dense city could help deal with the challenges for China's urbanization through after theoretical and practical analysis. High-density cities have different forms, and high-rise buildings in moderate density are compact urban practices with Chinese characteristics for the special conditions in our country. With the progress of the times, the multivariately mixed, compact, low-carbon and energy-efficient urban construction model which is represented by high-rises with rational vertical concentration and high density is increasingly seen as a high degree of sustainability, so sustainable high-rise buildings are essential for sustainable city.Sustainable development is the overall concept, related to social, economy and environment and so on."Sustainable development is to found a method of social cohesion, economic and efficient, ecological good production mode and reasonable existing resources distribution."The sustainable development of high-rise buildings must also be reflected in these aspects. Under consideration in such a holistic, this article analyzes the sustainable design methods of modern high-rise buildings through the harmonious symbiotic relationship between buildings and environment, three-dimensional cities of mixed functions, vibrant public space and green low-carbon eco-design. The successful experiences of high density city and excellent practices of sustainable high-rise buildings in both Hong Kong and New York provide valuable reference cases for our constructions of sustainable development architectures and cities.
