Research On Rehabilitation And Redevelopment Of Industrial Brownfield Landscape In Shanghai

Post-industrialization creates a large amount of brownfield for industrial cities. Even though new urban transformation challenges the protection of industrial heritages, growing creative industries provide new solutions for the revitalization of these brownfield sites. This paper discusses brownfield issues such as preservation, redevelopment and revitalization through explaining the general theories of brownfield development in China and other countries. The history of brownfield redevelopment and landscape design methods are summarized in this paper. Research cases are from industrial brownfield redevelopment projects of creative industrial zones in Shanghai area. Landscape design methods, mainly of space transformation, surface renovation, landscape opusculum design, planting, and lighting, are summarized through case studies and are applied in the proposed project. This paper aims for future reference and to guide new programs of urban brownfield landscape redevelopment.
