Research And Development Of A Digital Wood Herbarium

This thesis aims to comprehensively and systematically study on the characteristic and property of wood, develop a PC-based wood specimens management system. Combining the situation of the wood specimen room of Nanjing Forestry University, it has researched and analyzed the existing query systems of wood character and property international and domestic. The research object obtained from wood specimens which came from the wood herbarium of Nanjing Forestry University. It used Microsoft Access 2003 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 as developing tool, and used the technology like database and VB.NET. This system has realized the functions of querying and searching in various forms and information management.Firstly, the information about the type specimen, sliced specimen, three-section sample and other sample in NJFU wood specimens room has been collected and gathered. Validating the wood character and property, supplying the no information wood character and property, comparing different wood species, all of these supply this database credible information.Secondly, using Microsoft Access and taking all factors and consideration for the situation of wood specimens room and users, combining with specimen and wood character and feature information, this paper establish the database. The database nearly concludes all the specimen of NJFU wood herbarium, and record their feature about some common wood in detailed. It concludes a large number of macroscopic and microscopic images.Finally, based on VB.NET technology, this paper uses Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 to design and develop the wood specimen management system. This system has a friendly interface, realizes querying by wood names and specimen position etc. to reach the query function; to be able to realize search function by the macroscopic and microscopic and other features of wood; to be able to realize management function of adding, omitting, revising.This system based on NJFU wood specimens room, and took an important step for establish Digital Wood Herbarium. It can manage wood specimens room better. At the same time it can be apply into the fields of studying, and education and so on. It also can promote and improve the digitalization level of the timber science and technology.
