Hickory (Carya carthayensis) which is an membership of walnut family(Juglandaceae) is an important dry fruit and woody oil tree with high economic value and broad prospects. Seedlings of C. hunanensis is a good choice as rootstock for hickory. The vessel grows seedlings is the current various countries widespread use nursery stock production technology, and using this technology can promote the seed-breeding process. In these studies,4 light media materials including peat, perlite, vermiculite and mature hickory husk and garden mould, gray forest soil and sandy soil were used as media and mixed according to mixture design method.9 formulas and 11 formulas were used in cultivation experiment for C. cathayensis and C. hunanensis respectively. Physical and chemical properties of each media formulas, growth of seedlings and mitsukazu indexes were examined in order to facilitate screening suitable formulas.The result are:(1) Ground diameter and seedling height growth of hickory seedlings cultured with 9 formulas were with significant differences. The data show that hickory seedlings grow well at H5,H6,H7,H8 media formulas with diameter respectively is 0.69cm,0.70cm,0.71cm; Hickory seedlings at H5,H6,H7,H8 media formulas had stronger mitsukazu ability and viability. The correlation between ground diameter and seedling height and PH, rapid available potassium and available phosphorus were apparent. Correlation coefficient between ground diameter and PH is 0.59, and with rapid available potassium is 0.66. Correlation coefficient between seedling height and PH is 0.73, and with rapid available potassium is 0.59.(2) In 11 kind of Hunan Carya.cathayensis matrix, what the diameter is biggest is the matrix 7,8, respectively is 0.74cm,0.75cm; What the seedling highly is biggest is the matrix 7,8, the seedling highly is 36.3cm. C. hunanensis seedlings at HN3,HN4,HN5 media formulas had stronger mitsukazu ability and viability. The correlation between ground diameter and seedling height and hydrolyzable nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic matter were apparent. Correlation coefficient between ground diameter and hydrolyzable nitrogen, available phosphorus and organic matter is 0.79,0.74 and 0.87 respectively. Correlation coefficient between seedling height and these 3 properties is 0.57,0.58 and 0.66 respectively.
