| As a municipal tree in Hangzhou, Cinnamomum camphora is one of the most important ancient trees in the Around West Lake Scenic Area, which carries with millennium ancient capital's rise and decline of Hangzhou, laden with the formation and development of West Lake, and it has become an important part of natural and man-made landscape in West Lake. In recently years, with the West Lake opening to the public free of charge and carrying out the comprehensive protection project of the West Lake, a part of ancient C. camphora was faced with the questions such as site conditions change etc., some ancient C. camphora appeared growth weakly, even was located near death. Therefore, those trees had to enhance the protection and management, and strengthen the treatment and rejuvenation for ancient C. camphora trees were a practical significance.First, it gave a mainly introduction about the habitat, phenological characteristics and growth process of ancient C. camphora in the Around West Lake Scenic Area, and determination of leaf increment, physiological Indexes, soil physical and chemical characteristics and nutrient elements in the paper. Second, the effect of different site condition on growth characteristics of ancient C. camphora was discussed. Based on these studies, the results were as follows:1. There were 143 ancient C. camphora in the Around West Lake Scenic Area after investigation,11 at tree age over 500 years, 21 at age of 300~499 years. They were distributed mainly in parks, temples, hotels, restaurants and woodlands. Meanwhile, the ancient C. camphora vary in growth posture under different site conditions. Thus, natural calamity, pests and diseases, a change of natural environment etc. were the main reasons that can affect the growth of ancient C. camphora .2. The phenological characteristics showed that the fruit can be held long time in the tree after riping, leaf-expansion period shortly, leaf-expansion and leaves shedding simultaneously were the primary phonological characteristics of ancient C. camphora in the Around West Lake Scenic Area. Since different fruit mature period the ancient C. camphora can be classed into two kinds: early fruiting and late fruiting. The phenology of ancient C. camphora was affected obviously by different natural stands conditions3. The soil in the Around West Lake was porous, while the soil nutrient levels were above average. Influenced by the water quality in the West Lake, soil pH where ancient C. camphora was partially alkaline. Based on the comparison of soil properties from different site conditions, soil properties in the green space of the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon Scenic Area were superior to the green space, lawn, and tree ponds at Round Lake. In tree ponds, soil properties with ceramic and bark mulch were superior to turf grass or seeded grass as mulch.4. According to the data of plant protecting enzymes activity, the growth potential of ancient C. camphora'which at age of 300~499 years were better than age of 200~299 in the same nature stands conditions, while those on the growth and metabolism similar to that of 100~199. The tree age over 500 years of C. camphora weaked markedly. Yellowing leaf make the activities of POD decreased. The growth of ancient C. camphora was not alike in different nature stands conditions. The trees that grew at green space and lawn of Round Lake were growing better than others trees that grew at tree ponds and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon Scenic Area.5. After been taking rejuvenation measures such as pests and disease control, trunk nutrient injection fertilization, site conditions improvement, tree-hale repaired, etc, content of chlorophyll and the activities of SOD increased and the MDA contents and the activities of POD decreased for ancient C. camphora. Thus, rejuvenation played a significant effect for ancient C. camphora. |
