Illicium lanceolatum A. C. Smith (Illiciaceae) is known popularly in China as "Mancao" or "Honduhui" and it is used in the treatment of inflammatory and ache. The plant grows wildly in Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi Province. Its fruit is similar to that of the Illicium verum Hook. f. (Chinese name star anise) and is poisonous, and sometimes is found as the counterfeit of star anise, so it has the name of poisonous star anise. There resource ofⅠ. lanceolatum A. C. Smith is very rich in China, and the plant is distributed in many areas south of the Yangtze, however, no exploitation has caused waste of resource. We can study chemical constituents and biological activity ofⅠ. lanceolatum A. C. Smith systemically, and isolate some of the monomer components biological activity-oriented fromⅠ. lanceolatum A.C.Smith. In order to development and utilizationⅠ. lanceolatum A.C.Smith resources comprehensively, we can find its new use for the active ingredient or develop new drugs to enhance value-added industries. Simultaneously, building the resource-saving agriculture is of great significance.1. The active fraction-acetic ether fraction (ACE) was obtained from the 80% ethanol extract of the aerial part ofⅠ. lanceolatum A. C. Smith.25 known compounds were isolated from the active fraction, and the structures of 19 compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic methods. Among them,15 compounds were isolated from this species for the first time.2. Comparative analysis of the constituents from the essential oils of the different parts and the rhizome ofⅠ. lanceolatum A. C. Smith. was investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).3. By using the ear edema model and the mouse acetic acid writhing model, the essential oil ofⅠ. lanceolatum A.C.Smith was found very good activities in anti-inflammatory and analgesic as well as in certain dose range showed a good linear relationship.4. By using the ear edema model and the mouse acetic acid writhing model, quercitrin was found very good activities in anti-inflammatory and analgesic as well as in certain dose range showed a good linear relationship. The antioxidant property of quercitrin was evaluated by using DPPH radical scavenging test and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity test. It was found that compared to other fractions, the quercitrin showed the good antioxidant activity.
