Illicium verum Hook.f. which belong to Illicium of Illiciaceae, is one of main economic trees indigenous to Southern China. This plant can also be name star anise, which mainly plants in Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou, Yunnan province. Guangxi is the main production area of star anise, its production occupies 85% of China,70% of the world. Star anise is used as essence and medicament, so it is widely used in food, chemistry and medicament industry. Star anise has a lot of physiological functions such as restraining bacterium, antioxidant activity and easing pain. Up to date, some researches on the constituents and pharmacological activities of Illicium have been reported in international, but there were not any literatures about the chemical constituents of the water fraction of the plant. In.order to further investigate the chemical constituents of Illicium, the water soluble fractions from star anise was separated in this dissertation.The dissertation was composed of three parts. In the first part, it was a review the research progress of Illicium, which mainly included its chemical constituents and pharmacology activities. In the second part, the chemical constituents of the fruits of the plant's water soluble fractions was isolated. In the last part, the structures of chemical constituents from the fruits of the water soluble fractions of 75% ethanol extracts was elucidated.The air-dried powdered fruits of Illicium was extracted by 75% ethanol, and then the ethanolic extract was concentrated to a brown viscous mass, which was subsequently suspended in water and then partitioned by petrol ether, ethyl acetate. The latter fraction was diluted in H2O, which was subjected to column chromatograph on D101 to get five fractions, and 20% EtOH eluting fraction was chromatographed on MCI using H2O-EtOH as eluant with an increasing ratio of EtOH to get four fractions(Fr.Ⅰ, Fr.Ⅱ, Fr.Ⅲ, Fr.Ⅳ).Then they were subjected to silica gel cc, chromatograph Sephadex LH-20 column and RP-C18 column to yield thirteen compounds. The structures of compounds were identified on the basis of 1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS, and IR data and by comparison of them with the references, they were shikimic acid 3-O-β-D-mannopyranose(1"-6')-β-D-mannopyranose(1), shikimic acid 1(2), shikimic acid 2(4), fructose (5),2,4-dehydroxy-Benzoic acid (6), acacetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8), isoshikimic acid (9),4-methoxyl-3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyloxybenzoic acid methyl ester (10) and p-hydroxy-benzoic acid (11). Compound 9 was identified as new compounds by searching data-base of SciFinder Scholar. Compounds 1,5,6,7 and 9 were isolated from the plant for the first time.
