Objective: To observe the influence of Bitter melon, hawthorn, yam on metabolism of mice with diet induced metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance (IR) and serum superoxidase dismutase ( SOD ) , maleic dialdehyde (MDA), and to explore their effects. Methods: Forty-eight 8-week-old healthy male SD rats were randomly divided into 2 groups which were vacuity group(n=12)and experimental group(n=36).Experimental group was fed with high lipid ,high glucose and high salt diet for 16 weeks to induce experimental metabolic syndrome.33 SD rats in experimental group modeled successfully were randomly divided into 3 groups: model group, high dose of Bitter melon,Hawthorn,Yam group, low dose of Bitter gourd,Hawthorn,Yam group ,which were fed with the appropriate drug for 5 weeks. To observe the measure weight, lipid, fasting blood glucose, serum insulin, and other indicators, calculate Lee's index and HOMA-IR, to evaluate model and drug effect. Before and after drug therapy, we observed the pathological change of aorta by H staining method, and test the SOD,MDA levels of blood. Results: 1. After fed for 16 weeks, the weight, abdominal circumference, lipids TG, TC and LDL-C, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR of rats model with MS were significantly higher, HDL-C level of reduction(p<0.01),compared with the vacuity group. 2. Compared with the MS model group, the weight,Lee's index, visceral fat weight, visceral fat and body weight ratio,TG,TC,LDL-C, FINS,HOMA-IR in Bitter melon,Hawthorn, yam high dose group and low dose group were decreased(P<0.01).3. Compared with the vacuity group, the SOD levels of MS model group were significantly lower (P<0.01orP<0.05).Compared with the MS model group, the SOD in all treatment groups were significantly higher(P<0.01orP<0.05). The MDA levels of MS model group were significantly higher(P<0.01orP<0.05).Compared with the MS model, the MDA in all treatment groups were significantly lower(P<0.01orP<0.05). compared with model group, treatment effects are similar to the two groups, the difference was not significant(P>0.05).Conclusion:1. The weight, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and disordered lipid metabolism of MS rats can be improved by Bitter melon,Hawthorn,yam.2. Bitter melon,Hawthorn, yam can improve the SOD and MDA levels of MS rats, increasing antioxidant capacity and reduce the generation of lipid peroxides, with the effect to protect cardiovascular disease.
