Objective:Human papillomavirus (HPV) as a group of double stranded small DNA viruses, HPV infection is believed to be related with the development of many types of human tumors. Sincethe first report suggested that there was a close relationship between HPV infection and thepathologic change of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) by Syrjanen in 1982, a greatamount of literatures had been published by scholars in this field in the past few decades. However, it is still controversial whether HPV infection plays a causal role in pathogenesis of esophageal carcinoma. Henan-Anyang region is a high incidence of esophageal carcinoma in Henan province in China. Previous studies have shown thatthere were high frequency of HPV infection in the samples of esophageal carcinoma and itspaired adjacent tissues, indicating that HPV infection act an essential role in carcinogenesis of esophagus in this area. In order to further explore the present situation and the role of HPV(especially the high-risk HPV subtypes) infection in pathogenesis of esophageal carcinoma, So we researched the infections of HPV type 16, 18E6 in the samples including different human esophageal lesions, different tumor grades, clinical stages from the gene and protein sides,in order to investigate the relationship between the HPV16,18E6 infection and esophageal carcinoma. Methods: Using PCR ,Western-blotting and Envision method, we detected the infections of HPV type 16,18E6 in the samples including different human esophageal lesions, different tumor grades, clinical stages. The data of this study was statistically analyzed usingĻ‡2 test by SPSS13.0 statistical software. Results:(1) There were significant differences for the HPV16,18E6 infection between esophageal carcinoma, precancerous lesion and normal tissue(P<0.05)(2) The positive rate of HPV16,18E6 significantly increased between the different clinical stages of the esophageal carcinoma(P<0.05).(3) The expression of HPV16,18E6 were correlated with tumor grades of the esophageal carcinoma(P<0.05).(4) There were significant differences for HPV16,18E6 between the group with lymph node metastasis and the group without lymph node metastasis(P<0.05).Conclusions: The infection of the HPV16,18E6 increased with the development from the normal tissue to esophageal carcinoma. It means the infection of the HPV16,18E6 is correlated with the esophageal carcinoma. Moreover the infection of the HPV16,18E6 increased with different clinical stages and tumor grades of the esophageal carcinoma. It indicates that HPV16,18E6 maybe participate in the development of the esophageal carcinoma through the gene integration after it induces the esophageal carcinoma.
