| Along with the Peiping—Hankow Railway and the Longhai Railway's putting into operation in 1906 and 1908 successively,as well as being the port opened by the central government in 1908 and 1922,the modern Zhengzhou which was the junction of this two railroads emerged suddenly. The industrial and commercial development as well as the amount of population in Zhengzhou all gained greatly growth.Consequently,the modern Zhengzhou was regarded as one of the important national cotton market and the distributing center of exports from Zhongyuan and Northwest China.However,turbulence was the main feature in the period of the Republic of China,this situation influenced Zhengzhou city's development immensely.Moreover,the modern Zhengzhou also suffered from the Japanese invasion two times between 1937 to 1945,as a result,the speed of development and the level of transformation of Zhengzhou was seriously postponed.Under such circumstances,the citizens in modern Zhengzhou possessed of obvious changes in material life such as the dress,diet,residence and trip customs.The complicated changing details and the repeated changing process was rare in the whole history of Zhengzhou city.This essay tried to reveal the characteristics and the general rules of the evolution of the modern Zhengzhou's citizens' changes in material life.This essay was divided into six parts.The first part analysed the historical background of the modern Zhengzhou's citizens' changes in material life,this part included the rise and fall of the railroads,industry and commerce,the gathering and dispersedness of the population and the changes of the citizens' notions.The second part to the fifth part mainly analysed the embodiment of the material life,namely,the changes in the dress,diet,residence and trip customs.the last part chiefly commented the major peculiarity of the modern Zhengzhou's citizens' changes in material life,namely the overall slowness,the disequilibrium to some extent and the malformation in some ways. |
