China is a nation with a long history, vast land, various natural and humanitarian scenic spots. With the deepening reform and opening-up policy, the tourism industry has enjoyed a rapid growth in China with more and more foreign tourists pouring into China. Thus, the translation of tourism text has drawn more and more attention. However, there are many shortcomings in previous studies, for example, some researches pay too much attention to theories but fail to propose some practical strategies, while other researches merely talk about strategies without their application to the actual situation. The functional theories of translation have drawn tremendous attention from the general public since it came into being in Germany and have been applied to many studies. Meanwhile, skopos theory is one of the most advanced functional theories for translation. According to skopos theory, translation should be unleashed from'source text'and during the translation process, the purpose of translation should be paid more heed to. Translators should focus on the purpose of translation and adopt different strategies and methods according to different translation purposes, so the equivalence is not emphasized. In the framework of skopos theory, there are three rules: skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, in which the first rule is the guiding principle and the rest two are subordinate ones because the ultimate goal of the translators is to fulfill the purpose of translation. As a consequence, this theory throws new light upon the translation of tourism text, namely, the purpose of tourism text translation is to help foreign tourists understand Chinese customs and culture so as to attract more tourists. This thesis not only analyzes skopos theory and its feasibility in tourism text translation, but also gropes into the factors that influence translators, as well as the relevant strategies to be employed.
