The main characteristic of traditional Chinese literati painting is to be very elaborate about brushwork. The conclusion on the important effect of calligraphy on Chinese painting was put at the early time. But there is no certain explanation about the process of calligraphizing of Chinese painting. Although the calligraphic property of expressionism (XieYi) is frequently used to explain calligraphizing of painting, the relationship between expressionism and calligraphizing of painting hasn't been illustrated yet. I am attempting to describe the historic development of calligraphizing of painting and to define the relationship between expressionism and calligraphizing of painting, especially to address the importance of painting theories between Ming-Qing China. The main method of research is investigation into the traditional Chinese painting theories. In Chapter One, I discuss the development of calligraphizing of Chinese painting and of the art of ink and brush. The Ming-Qing painting theories make a crucial effect on elaborating the tendency for creating calligraphized painting. In Chapter Two, the content of Expressionism (XieYi) is clarified, i.e. Expressionism means how the artist will express their feelings, and moreover, the Ming-Qing painting theories emphasize calligraphizing (Xie) of painting. They provide a very important perspective and so they are important. In Chapter Three, the perspective of comparative culture is discussed, and lead to a conclusion that expressionistic property of Chinese painting has its universality, while calligraphic property of Chinese painting has its specialty. Expressionistic property and calligraphic property of Chinese painting have profound meaning in today's cultural globalization and multipolarization. And the content of expressionistic property including calligraphic property is the core value of the contemporary Chinese painting.
