With the development of higher education, private colleges play an important role in promoting the process of popularization of higher education. With the accelerated development of higher education, the number of poor students in private colleges has also increased year by year. As the vulnerable groups of poor colleges, they are dropping out of school or facing great difficulties to survive because of economic poverty, intertwined with many reasons, which make them suffer different degrees of psychological problems, especially their mental health. Therefore, solving the problem of poor students in private colleges is imminent.This essay is to illustrate the significance and value of the above problem, which analyzed the research status in domestic and foreign, and defined the concept of poor students, mental health, the standards of mental health and the standards of poor college students'mental health. This paper took the investigation way of University Personality Inventory (UPI) and Stratified sampling method to investigate 390 students'mental health of Poor students and non-poor students (freshman or sophomore) in Guilin Shan Shui Vocational College. Poor students conducted a questionnaire survey, while non-poor students taking the investigation, as the study control group. Investigation involving arts, science, art and other professional students, a total of 390 questionnaires,377 questionnaires were recovered, response rate was 96.7%, of which 363 valid questionnaires were valid questionnaires was 96.3%. Valid data 363 people,223 poor students,140 non-poor students. Through 8 (UPI) scale showed poor Mental Health Survey results, including sample composition, described mental health status of poor students, poor students degree of mental health statistics, UPI survey of key projects, poor students in detection of symptoms of major mental, poor health status of gender differences in mental health, mental health status of poor students grade difference, poor students and non-poor students more mental health disparities. The results showed:(1) UPI score, the minimum is 0 and the maximum is 44 points, statistical mean is 14.9±9.76. what's more, lower score took more, which showed the obvious psychological problems in the poor students. (2) Of the first type (with more serious mental disorder) accounted for 20.2%, the second category (mild mental disorder) accounted for 31.8%, and the third category (good mental health) accounted for 48%,107 students, which showed that 52% of the students suffered different levels of psychological distress and psychological problems. (3) For poor students of gender and grade differences in mental health, poor mental health and non-poor students in health disparities, mainly from neurosis, depression, schizophrenia, and out of these dimensions tend to analyze the results:poor health aspects of mental health in the year there is no significant difference between the poor students of gender, poverty, health and mental health of non-poor students the differences were significant differences. According to the survey results and analysis, the main mental problems of poor students in private college are:low self-esteem, anxiety, fear, depression, emotional instability, severe nervous breakdown, intense psychological conflict, interpersonal disharmony, lack of self-confidence and so on. The paper mainly study affecting mental health factors of poor students from their family, school environment, society and individual psychology. For the mental health of poor students, the state policy and system for aiding students should be improved, psychological health education and counseling system should be completed in private colleges, insisting on the combination of aiding and educating poor students to improve their overall quality.
