Japanese colonial rule has affected the development of Taiwan film. Taiwan film industry had grown up in the Japanese colonial period. Japanese colonialists promoted the prosperity of Taiwan film projection industry, and the process of film producing helped to train the practitioners for Taiwan film industry. After Japan was defeated, it is the left film production equipments that are the basis for Taiwan film's starting. Not only Japanese colonial rule has affected the development of Taiwan film industry, but also has influenced the film's narrative. Many Taiwan films contain the Japan complex, which can be divided into "hatred of Japan" and "pro-Japanese." Japan complex leads to that Taiwan film can't confirm its national identity. As a result, many Taiwan films begin to weaken the power of father authority and tell the story of growing up without a father. Taiwan movie resists the adult world by the younger generation's independent growth. Through the awakening of feminist consciousness and the expression of homosexual feelings the patriarchal order of Taiwan film is deconstructed, in order to obtain equal status with China and Japan. To show the uniqueness of Taiwan, Taiwan film begins to focus on the local perspective, adopting the theme of travelling to change the colonial image of Taiwan formed during the Japanese colonial period. Taiwan film writes the living condition of the local people from the two dimensions "history" and "contemporary", combining the local experience with the colonial history, expressing the local people's emotion, and bringing Taiwan consciousness into the resident's daily life. The elements of Taiwan geography, people, history and present compose the Taiwan film local experience.
