This dissertation studies the composition technique on the French unstressed central vowel "[a]" as a core of text-music relation in these two French Operas:Georges Bizet:Carmen;Claude-Achille Debussy:Pelleas et Melisande. In aspects of "text" and "music" and by means of statistics, induction, analysis and comparison, the dissertation searches the note distribution methods for this vowel phoneme used by Bizet and Debussy in the two operas. The dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter compiles statistics, induces and expounds the application and quantity of five note distribution methods used in the two operas. The second chapter analyses relation between note distribution methods and "text", and searches the selection reasons of the methods in three aspects:the position of the vowel "[a]" in a word, readthrough, and rhyme. The third chapter analyses relation between note distribution methods and "music", and searches the selection reasons of the methods in three aspects:rhythm, pitch, and unity in symmetrical structure. The conclusion summarizes the similarities and dissimilarities between the composition technique on the unstressed central vowel "[a]" in the two operas, and also expresses inspirations given by them. The appendices comprises an index of examples, and libretti of the two operas with reseaching marks.
