Expo 2010 Shanghai furnishes China with a precious opportunity of exhibiting its charms and foreign tourists eagerly expect to enjoy the attractive expo as well. 2010ESCOG, an instrument of transferring pertinent information, is an important channel for the foreigners to know China and the pavilions, so the translation deserves an in-depth study. This thesis explores C-E translation of 2010ESCOG under the guidance of Skopostheorie that considers translation as an intentional activity. And the choice of translation strategies is determined by the expected functions, which gets rid of the bondage of equivalence-based translation for the research of pragmatic texts. With the aim of achieving the communicative purpose, i.e. attracting foreigners to visit Expo Shanghai, this thesis points out that the C-E translation of 2010ESCOG should be tourist-oriented rather than source-text-centered. In respect to the translation of 2010ESCOG, the differences of the receivers between ST and TT and the operative function of the TT are identical to the ideologies of Skopostherorie.Chapter One elaborates the significance, objective and organization of the thesis, and overview of skopostheorie and tourism materials are made in Chapter Two. Chapter Three introduces briefly Skopostheorie with its basic concepts and principles, and analyzes the text typology, the roles of translators and target readers of the guidebooks. In Chapter Four, based on Skopostheorie, the thesis makes contrasts between ST and TT, realing that the common problems in translation mainly fall into two categories, namely, linguistics and culture. Chapter Five will illustrate the necessity of adaption in the process of translation according to the theory, that is, metaphrase, transliteration, addition, omission, analogy and paraphrase. Chapter Six is a summary of the findings of the thesis, the limitations of the research as well as the suggestions for future studies. This thesis, through multitudes of examples, proves that Skopostheorie plays a great role of guiding the C-E translation of 2010ESCOG, which finds expression in translation skopos, text typology, and application of appropriate translation strategies. The author expects that the study will be beneficial to the research and practice of C-E translation of other similar tourism texts.
