Co-Occurrenee Relation Between Verb Reduplication And Adverbs Of Quantification

Momentum category is one of the most important grammatical categories in Chinese language. There are many measures in Chinese language to express momentum, such as adverbs of quantification,complement of quantification and verb reduplication. All of these measures can express momentum in communication and have co-occurrence restrictions, especially the verb reduplication, which does not occurrence with the quantitative element in general. But we also notice that the verb reduplication and adverbs of quantification have the co-occurrence relation in some language date, which are related less in previous studies. In this paper, under the foundation of the classification about the two measures, we describe the co-occurrence relation with the grammatical and semantic theories, and try to analysis the reasons.In introduction, the first chapter, it reviews the previous studies, and describes the main issues and theoretical approaches in the paper.The second chapter, it analyzes the co-occurrence relations between un-continuous verb reduplication and adverbs of quantification. First, we analyze the condition of the reduplication, and then we study the co-occurrence relation between un-continuous verb reduplication and adverbs of quantification: In frequent adverbs, only low frequent adverbs can co-occur with un-continuous verb reduplication; and high frequent adverbs don't occur with it; and intermediate frequent adverbs only occur with the verb reduplication that expresses the things. In range adverbs, only temporary adverbs don't occur with it. The reasons why there are many differences can end with the semantic meaning and the conversation.The third chapter, it analyzes the choice relationship among continuous verb reduplication and adverbs of quantification. Because there is only a little uncontrolled continuous verb reduplication, so the key point is to find the choice relationship between the next continuous verb reduplication and adverbs of quantification. Controlled verb reduplication can occur with adverbs of quantification. Because the verb can be controlled by the person who makes it, so they are easy to have the choice relationship.The forth chapter, it analyzes the choice relationship between the special verb reduplication and adverbs of quantification. Only temporary adverbs don't occur with it. The type"AABB"about the verb reduplication has grammatical meaning of"enlarge the quantification", frequent adverbs don't have contradiction with it and temporary adverbs in range adverbs don't occur with it.Under the foundation of description the Co-occurrence relation, we combine with the cognitive and conversation theories, and explain the reason of the choice relationship. From the description and the explanation, we can see the differences and the identical between the two measures. And this thesis also enriches the studies of the verbs and adverbs.
