Of Chinese Statement With English The Contrast Translation Of The Composite Object Sentences

The comparison between Chinese and English attracts increasingly attention in linguistic field, sentence constructions in contrastive studies have always played an important role. Chinese pivotal sentence and English complex object sentence share the similar logical meaning, which both express the concept that is to make person or things in a certain state or perform a certain act. Besides, they basically correspond to the structure of the form, there is a pattern. These two sentence constructions share many similarities, with relatively comparable property. Therefore, the thesis is based on functional equality and meaning parallelism, focusing on the similarities and differences between Chinese pivotal sentence and English complex object sentence. The contrasts between the two sentence constructions are not rich, and the existing researches mainly focus on type analysis and example illustrating, lacking of comprehensive statistical study of two formats.On the basis of statistic analysis of Chinese and English existential constructions on the two-way parallel Chinese-English 574,000-word-corpus, this thesis intends to adopt a quantitative analysis. According to the previous classification, we consider Verb1 as the sign, taking into account the overall constructional meaning, identify five categories of Chinese pivotal sentences and six types of English complex object sentences, under which summarized the translation methods and the frequency of the correspondent constructions between Chinese pivotal sentences and English complex object sentences.By comparing the number of original Chinese pivotal sentences with that of original English complex object sentences, we find 559 Chinese pivotal sentences in about 336,000 words parallel corpus, while 549 English complex object sentences in about 238,000 words parallel corpus, which indicates that the usage of English complex object sentences in more frequent than that of Chinese pivotal sentences.Literal translation is often used in Chinese pivotal sentences and English complex object sentences, it accounts for 71.9 percent in Chinese pivotal sentences translation and 71.8 in English complex object sentences, indicating that the two sentences in the literal translation are of same frequency and high proportion, and literal translation is the preferred approach in sub-constructions as well. Conversion accounts for 19.5 percent in Chinese pivotal sentences and 20 percent in English complex object sentences, which are almost equal. Of pivotal sentences in original text, free translation accounts for 8.6 percent in Chinese-English translation, and as to English complex object sentences, it accounts for 8.2 percent.In addition, we also examine the usage of the correspondent construction between Chinese pivotal sentences and English complex object sentences. There are four types of Chinese pivotal correspondent construction, namely complex object sentence, S+V+O sentence, S+V+O+A sentence and causative word-sentence. We can find five kinds of English complex object correspondent sentences:pivotal sentence, SV as Object clause, S+V+O+A sentence, ba-sentence, resulative sentence and double-object sentence. Besides, around 54.7 percent of Chinese pivotal sentences translate into English complex object sentences, and about 53 percent of English complex object sentences translate into Chinese pivotal sentences, both of the ratio are more than half, indicating that the translated correspondent ratio between Chinese pivotal sentences and English complex object sentences are relatively higher.
