A Contrastive Analysis Approach To The Translation Of Chinese Run-on Sentences

Chinese run-on sentences are a unique syntactical construciton in comparison to English languge.It appears frequently and in large numbers in Chinese discourse,and constitutes a major challenge in Chinese-English translation..Therefore,the study of English translation of Chinese run-on sentences is of great significance in the English translation of Chinese works and in the promotion of Chinese culture overseas.By comparing differences between English and Chinese and analyzing the structural differences between Chinese run-on sentences and English complex sentences,this paper summarizes methods for translating Chinese run-on sentences into English in a more systematic and comprehensive way,supported by examples from the author’s translation practice of An Illustrated Brief History in 50 Art Treatures.It is found that there are significant differences between Chinese run-on sentences and English complex sentences in terms of constituent unit,cohesion,tense,voice,etc.On the basis of these differences,solutions are provided in translating Chinese run-on sentences through case analysis,including deciding a proper subject for the English translation,making the semantic and logic relations between clauses obvious by adding function words,leaving out the redundant information from the original sentences,etc.It is hoped that this paper can not only provide a certain direction for the English translation of Chinese run-on sentences,but also have certain significance for the English translation of other sentence structures in Chinese,thus generally contributing to the increase of level of English translation of Chinese culture.
