Research On Translation Strategies Of Roberts' Three Kingdoms Under The Perspective Of Cultural Capital

Ever since the last two decades, translation studies have been surpassing the domain of linguistic research into a more macrographic field, which has made room for the reflection of the influence of cultural and social factors on translation studies. Social and cultural context not simply place restriction on the translator's selection of source text but have been exerting a tremendous impact on the production and acceptance of translated text. In this thesis, the author selects Three Kingdoms translated by American sinologist Moss Robets to analyze the relationship between cultural capital and translation strategies. With the aid of compensation theory in translation, the thesis attempts to explore the optimal foreignization that is in favor of cultural capital retaining. This would infuse a new element into the study of translation strategies in Three Kingdoms and expand its range of study.Through a deep analysis into Three Kingdoms, the author finds out that Roberts adopts foreignization as the dominant translation strategy to translate Three Kingdoms. Objectively speaking, his endeavor of being fully faithful to the original by restoring its true face secures the sufficient retaining of cultural capital. Moreover, in view of the possible limitation of foreignization, Roberts consciously applies various compensation measures to bring into full play the advantages of foreignization in cultural capital retaining and circulation.
