On Foreignization From Perspective Of Postcolonial Translation Studies

According to postcolonial theory, cultures in the world should be in equal status and there is no label of advancedness or backwardness to be laid upon them. But out of historical reasons, western cultures, backed up by their powerful economic, military and political strengths, distort non-western culture in many ways, advocating their superiority to other cultures during and after their colonial occupation and domination, to which it is the task for postcolonial scholars to resist.Postcolonial translation studies relate to politics in translation theories and practice. In the situation that many of the former colonized still depend on the former metropolitan both economically and politically after declaration of independence, and are affected by the present trend of globalization, many scholars regard foreignizing translation as a cultural resistance of less powerful culture to powerful cultures.However, abuse of foreignization in translation will not help communication between powerful and less powerful cultures but harm it instead. Therefore, the author of this thesis points out some weaknesses of foreignization-oriented translation while favoring the views of postcolonialism and its translation theories, trying to make some compensation in the foreignization translation.
