The research on Chinese language literature started from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. The works of Chinese language literature display various complicated styles and modes because the writers live in different eras. As one of the representatives of Chinese language literature writers in North America, Zhang Ling began to create in the mid 1990s. Her works are as exquisite and gentle as trickles, filled with hope, yet without any anger, criticism or complaint, and always end up with warmth, leaving readers to reflect on each line of her works, which tend to express the common nature of human beings. Additionally, her style represents the change of Chinese language literature since late 1990s very well, which emphasizes the fusion of traditional culture and foreign culture and shows the respect and recognition for cultures of different countries, with deep reflection about human nature and history. What distinguishes her from numerous Chinese language literature writers is she avoids the conflict and confrontation between Chinese culture and western culture and seeks for cross-border dialogue and integration instead. This paper attempts to comb the development vein of Chinese language literature, explore Zhang Ling's achievement in this area, and generally analyze it from two aspects, i.e. content and form. The first chapter of the paper is a summary about Zhang Ling's biography and related researches, and gives a new interpretation about Chinese language literature in a creative way. The second chapter, starting from the aspect of content, discusses Zhang Ling's natural and cross-border writing in terrain, history, culture, religion and so on, and analyzes Zhang Ling's unique and sober cultural attitude, and her understanding and concern for universal human nature. The third chapter analyzes her techniques in language, rhetoric, narrative perspectives and so on from the angle of form. Her creative style not only absorbs the western narrative method but also retains the quiet style of Chinese traditional literature, thus she can present stories with attractive ups and downs in a graceful way.In the context of globalization today, there are various complicated cultural phenomena, with the crisscross, invasion and counter-balance of the modern culture and traditional culture. However, eastern and western cultures have gradually staggered from the fierce strike to each other into an era of mutual understanding and recognition. Different consciousness and cultural collisions have shown a mixed and overlapped status. Zhang Ling's creation well represents the progress of the times, giving new direction and enlightenment for Chinese language literature's development, which is quite worthwhile for researchers to pay attention to and reflect on.
