Vague language as a considerable fascination language phenomenon and pragmatic strategy, objectively and widely existed in every aspect of human life. Although there is a long history that people pay attention to fuzziness, the special research on vague langauge just began twenty or thirty years ago. Because vague languages are frequently used in nonverbal communication, the research in this area appears to be necessary.With the further research of language, the vague language has been widely accepted by people and constantly applied to different communication areas, such as daily conversation, advertising diction, news reports, business negotiation, etc. It is found that there are also vague language appeared in serious type of report. Naturally, it is true of its use in flexible and changeable diplomatic language.Since most of the research on vague language mainly focuses on its analysis in our daily communication, work and life, few of them pay attention to the study of how our country's top leaders use vague languages to handle diplomatic relations. Therefore, this paper aims to study vague language in diplomatic language, and take the recent 10 year's press conference for example. With the help of Verschueren's (2000) theory of adaptation, the author analyzes how vague language adapts to diplomatic language from the contextual angle of the four angles like contextual angle, the structural angle, the dynamic angle, and the salient angle. The analysis shows that the use of vague language in diplomatic language is not only a linguistic choice, but also a linguistic adaptation of vague language to certain requirements of diplomatic language. As for diplomatic language, appropriate use of vague language can resolve the embarrassing situation caused by sharp or sensitive problem. At the same time, it can convey objective, realistic diplomatic standpoint to fulfill the national political purpose.
