Vague language,an inherent property of language,plays a vital role in the language communication between people,and this linguistic phenomenon is more common in diplomatic language.Due to the linguistic features of the vague words,there are corresponding difficulties in interpreting them,especially in the diplomatic interpreting.As a common diplomatic strategy,the vague language appears more frequently.Therefore,studying interpretation strategies of diplomatic vague language is expected to promote the development of diplomatic interpretation.This paper mainly focuses on three issues.First,analyzing the cause of vague language,which includes the ambiguity of the objective world,the ambiguity of language itself,the differences in human understanding,and the inevitable requirement of human communication.Second,analyzing the classification of diplomatic vague languages and its pragmatic functions.Through literature review and analysis,the author puts forward that the diplomatic vague languages can be divided into lexical vagueness and rhetorical vagueness,and the pragmatic functions of diplomatic ambiguity can be divided into three points: summarize in a general way,avoid embarrassing each other and avoid sensitive questions.Third,analyzing the interpretation strategies of diplomatic vague language under the guidance of the Skopos Theory.Under the guidanceof the Skopos Theory developed by Hans Vemeer,translation scholar in Germany,the author takes the Premier Li Keqiang answers questions from Chinese and foreign journalists at the two sessions in 2018 and 2019 as the main research content,combines the characteristics of diplomatic interpretation and the causes and characteristics of vague language and uses qualitative research methods to propose two interpretation strategies including from precision to vagueness and from vagueness to vagueness and several interpretation methods including free interpretation,addition,literal interpretation and ellipsis.
