Discussion Of Vagueness In Diplomatic Languages With Contextual Adaptation And Methods For Interpreting Diplomatic Vague Languages

Diplomatic activities are of great importance to maintain sound state-to-state relationship. Mostly in diplomatic occasions, speakers from different countries are faced with communicative problems due to linguistic difference, where interpreters play a significant role in conveying information of speakers to audiences. As a common diplomatic pragmatic strategy, vague language is used by speakers to safeguard national interests. In such cases, interpreters should firstly correctly understand vagueness in diplomatic languages and then interpret them into target languages that conforms to linguistic using habits of English-speaking audiences so as to help proceed the diplomatic activities.Scholars at home and abroad have studied vagueness in languages from different perspectives since it's found out by Pierce; however, there's still much improvement for analysis of vague languages on the basis of Pragmatics. As a result, the author tries to analyze vague languages from the perspective of Adaptation Theory, and then discuss application of vagueness in diplomatic activities by analyzing the corpus of Li Keqiang Meets the Press in 2015. In the end, methods to interpret diplomatic vague languages are put forward. Findings of this thesis are as follows:Vague languages are classified into shields and approximators. Speakers are purposeful to use vague languages to adapt to mental world?social world and physical world. When interpreting Chinese vague languages into English ones, interpreters should take language differences into account so as to make target languages better understood by audiences.In conclusion, author hopes to provide useful interpreting methods on diplomatic vague languages via this thesis.
