With the globalization accelerating, the communication between countries is getting closer and closer.Interpretation has become a hot research topic in recent years.Diplomatic interpretation,as an important form of interpretation, has also attracted great attention, because the accuracy of diplomatic interpretation is related to the interests and the image of the country.Press conference interpretation,as an important part of the diplomatic interpretation,is worth studying.Press conferences,as a window for foreign countries to understand China's policy guidelines, often involve some sensitive topics, vague language will be adopted by the speaker in order to ease the tensions and achieve certain communicative purposes. Therefore, vague language is common in press conferences. The interpreter,as a communication bridge between the premier and journalists, should first understand the meaning of vague language and its corresponding pragmatic effects when dealing with the vague language in press conferences, and then interpret it with the target language's idiomatic expressions. In fact, the process of interpretation is also a process that the interpreter makes linguistic choices continually.Verschueren's Adaptation Theory holds that the speaker is making linguistic choices continually while expressing the meaning. The reason why the speaker constantly makes linguistic choices in the process of language use is due to its variability, negotiability and adaptability. In addition, the vague language in press conference is also the result of the speaker's continuous linguistic choices so as to realize the adaptation of the vague language to the context. Therefore, there is a close relationship between vague language and Adaptation Theory. The study on vague language interpretation can be fully understood from the perspective of Adaptation Theory. The four angles of investigation in Adaptation Theory also provide a new perspective for the study on vague language interpretation.Vague language interpretation in Premier Li's remarks in the press conference of 2017 is viewed as the object of research, this thesis analyzes the application of vague language in press conference and summarizes corresponding interpretation strategies of vague language based on Adaptation Theory, aiming at helping interpreters to complete the task of interpretation successfully.Qualitative method and example analysis are adopted in this thesis,it is found that Adaptation Theory bears more explanatory power for vague language interpretation compared with other theories. Moreover, interpreting strategies including vague to vague and vague to clear can be adopted in vague language interpretation at press conference and can help interpreters to deal with vague language and then complete the task successfully. This thesis is composed of five chapters;the chapter one mainly introduces the research background, research objectives and significance, research methodology, research questions as well as the structure of this thesis. The chapter two defines the important concepts in this thesis, and summarizes the previous related research. The chapter three introduces the related content of Adaptation Theory, and provides a theoretical framework for the following researches. The chapter four is the main part of this thesis, the author will make an in--depth study on vague language interpretation in Premier Li's Remarks in the Press Conference of 2017 from the perspective of Adaptation Theory, and summarize the corresponding interpretation strategies from example analysis. The last chapter of this thesis is a summary including major findings of research, implications of research, limitations of research and suggestions for future research.
