The Appeasement Policy implemented by Britain toward Japan during the"September 18th Incident"in 1931 exerts great influence on situation in the Far East before World War II. Japan's full use of the Appeasement Policy not only intensifies tense situation in the Far East, but also marks the beginning of the arduous anti- Japanese war over 14 years. The first section in this thesis mainly discusses the domestic backgrounds of Japan and Britain before the"September 18th Incident", and describes the whole process of the Incident. Before the Incident, Britain and Japan were in Great Depression. This economic crisis gave a heavy blow to the economies of both countries, but had different effects. Britain had no choice but to maintain the momentum of Washington System and treated safeguarding the interests of British in Old China as the primary goal of its foreign policy. However, in Japan, in order to get rid of crisis, people from all walks of life turned their eyes to China and agitated the invasion saying of Manchuria and Mongolia expanding territories, resulting in the"September 18th Incident"at last. The second section explores the whole process of Japan's full use of the Appeasement Policy implemented by Britain in details: from temptation, drift to active aggression in the course of the Incident's eruption, upgrading and escalation. Japan was not passive to accept the Appeasement Policy implemented by Britain during the different periods. Instead, Japan was active to lead and make use of the Appeasement Policy through active diplomatic and military strategies. Japan's full use of the Appeasement Policy not only realized the expected military goal, but also weakened the roles that Britain and America played in politics. As a result, the situation in the Far East developed in the direction of Japan. At last, the western world could do nothing but to be in an embarrassing position when the situation in the Far East was deteriorating. The third section analyses the causes for the Appeasement Policy and great influence of Japan's full use of the Appeasement Policy on situation in the Far East. The thesis holds that the internal causes for the Appeasement Policy toward Japan are recession of economic power, the failure to rearmament and the influence of pacifist ideas, and the external causes for implementing the Appeasement Policy in Far East are the economic and military rise of Japan after World War I and disruption of the Allies Between Britain and Japan. Japan's full use of the Appeasement Policy implemented by Britain during the"September 18th Incident"not only made the situation in Far East continuous turbulent, but also inflated fascist Japan's arrogance of aggression and expansion, in particular, resulting in the full aggression and invasion against China.
