Herbert Marcuse, an American-German philosopher and a significant member ofFrankfurt school. As an important representative of the Frankfurt School, he throughanalysed the alienation of capitalist society, revealed the repression of humanity incapitalist society deeply, thus improve the critical social theory of Frankfurt School. Astechnology continues to develop, not only in the developed capitalist society, even indeveloping countries, many of diseases of consumer society has become increasinglyevident.How to explain and resolve these issues, Marcuse's critical theory is no doubtprovides an important theoretical and methodological inspiration.This thesis focuses on Marcuse's critical theory of the consumer society, then toanalyse the critical sources of consumer society, and appraise the critical theory ofconsumer society. This thesis argues that he took alienation in work and consumeralienation as the theoretical core, made Marxism and Freudianism as theoretical basis,with seek the freedom and development as its theme, in-depth analyze and critical of thecauses and performance of consumer society,indicate the way to non-repressive societyto human, thereby build its strict and complete system of critical theory of consumersociety. Throughout Marcuse's thought, he stressed that people's spiritual life andconcerned human liberation, for us to correctly understand the nature of consumer societyand socialist construction of China has great significance. However, due to his critique ofconsumer society deviate from the track of materialism and dialectics, only stay thesurface of consumer society to suppress human, so that the establishment ofnon-repressive society as an aspiration.
