A Critical Discourse Analysis Of G20 Press Conference

G20 Summit is among the highest level and most influential international conference in the world, which is attended by significant figures from the whole world and held to discuss and confer on the critical issues that may influence world expansively and profoundly. The subsequent G20 press conference which is held by government leader and attended by journalists from the whole world obtained particular interest and attention as well.As for such a special press conference, power and ideology are critical factors that inevitably and covertly influence the production of the discourse. What is the objective reality behind the surface of discourse and in what a way the power and ideology exert potential and great influence to the actual discourse deserves to be exposed and revealed.In this thesis, the author conduct the research from the critical perspective by using the theoretical tool of critical discourse analysis and takes Fairclough's three dimentional model as the analysis framework to present a complete and integrated study. Critical discourse analysis has always been targeting mostly on the public discourses from media, newspapers, politicians and official statement, and press conference and so force. The core of the research is on the revelation of relationship between discourse, power and ideology in terms of a variety angles such as linguistics, sociology, psychology. Because CDA regards discourse as social practice, there are various elements behind the simple discourse that may affect its production. Power and ideology can influence the structure and content of the discourse, from another angle, the discourse reflects power and ideology and furthermore may reconstruct new power and ideology. The connection between these matters is complicated and delicate, and must be analyzed with combination to the social context. CDA provides a clear perspective to such research, which is the main methodology the author adopts. This research will be unfolded by the analysis from three angles as textual, discoursal, and socio-cultural dimension corresponding to Fairclough's three dimensional modal which has been proved to be greatly effective.This study takes G20 press conference held after the nearly most influential and highly-ranked international conference as target to find out how power flows and is presented under the cover of discourse, how ideology influences the production and is reflected by the discourse, and to reveal the close relations between discourses, power and ideology.
