Literary works function to reflect social reality or social nature and thoughts of the writers through describing social phenomenon or the living state of individuals. And writers tend to create a series of typical literary characters to realize this function of literature. The True Story of Ah Q by Lu Xun is a treasured piece of jewelry in the history of Chinese literature in which the writer created a solitary image of Ah Q who is described " changed spirits with constant image" by critics, while The Metamorphasis by Franz Kafka is believed to be one of the greatest literary works in modern western literature in 20th century in which Kafka, an Austrian writer, created a solitary image of Gregor with unique conception, fantastic plot and subtle psychological description who vividly reflects the inner world of the writer. Through a comparison between Ah Q and Gregor, this dissertation tries to reveal the fact that in spite of the different social situations, the two literary giants created two similar solitary literary images reflecting the living state of the ordinary people in different eastern and western societies with different political systems and that the solitary images embody the authors'care and concern about humans and human nature and reflect the different nature of different societies.
