Cognitive style, as an important part of individual difference, refers to habitual or preferred way of processing information. The consistence during the process of representation was called Representation style. The principal theories of representation style are verbal-imagery style developed by Riding and object-spatial visual and verbal style raised by Kozhevnikov. Based on these two theories, two kinds of measurement were used for style study: introspective self-report such as Kozhevnikov's Object-Spatial Imagery and Verbal Questionnaire(OSIVQ),and objective information processing test represented by Riding's Cognitive Style Analysis(CSA). Concerns have been raised about the reliability and validity of these two cognitive style measurements. The study aims at reviewing the studies of other researchers in order to find out the original reason affecting the reliability and validity of cognitive measurement. The second goal is developing a new objective information processing test of cognitive style to examine the object-spatial imagery, verbal style and meta-style, which we called object-spatial imagery and verbal cognitive style test (OSIV-CS).Methods: 167 participants of four junior and middle school grades completed this test, with two weeks apart. In the second test, 87 participants completed OSIV-CS and OSIVQ.Results: The coefficient of internal-consistency is 0.925. The split-half reliability is 0.814. The correlation of retest also reaches to the significant level, and the coefficient are separately 0.338(p<0.05) in four style categories, 0.778 (p<0.05) in verbal response percentage, 0.511(p<0.05) in object imagery response percentage, and 0.854 in spatial imagery response percentage. The correlation between the scores of the verbal and object imagery reaches to the significant level, and the coefficient are 0.224(p<0.05) in verbal dimension and 0.202(p<0.05) in object imagery dimension. But the correlation coefficient between scores of spatial imagery dimension in two cognitive style measurements is 0.019(p>0.05) and didn't reach to the significant level. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be conclude that OSIV-CS is a new and reliable objectives information processing test for object-spatial imagery and verbal style. The internal-consistency, spilt-half reliability, and retest reliability meet the criterion of psychometric. The congruent validity of object imagery and verbal dimensions in OSIV-CS also reach to the statistic standard, but the validity of spatial imagery still needs to investigate.
