With the rapid development of globalization in economy, international business and trade increase enormously. Being an international language and acting as official language in many countries, English itself has shown great significance in international trade and communication, and China's entering into WTO enables it to play a more active and important role in international business activities. In the process of conducting business or cooperation with foreign partners, after negotiation and letter correspondence, the parties concerned in most cases have to sign up the formal written document, which is called contract. As a linking factor between contracting parties concerned, translation of English business contract becomes more and more important. The thesis aims to offer the relative translation strategies and techniques to business people and translators, as to improve their communication with foreign partners. The thesis begins with the significance of the study on translation strategies of English business contract. Next, with a review and analysis on equivalence theory and English contract's characteristics, it discusses the relative translation principles and strategies. Finally, some suggestions on further study in the field are discussed. The thesis focuses on translation of English business contract on basis of equivalence theory. Functionalism sheds new lights on the translation activities, and puts forwards dynamic equivalence and communicative equivalences, etc. Later some linguists and scholars advanced translation equivalence theory, which emphasizes the functions of the target text in its culture and linguistic equivalence, stylistic equivalence and socio-cultural equivalence are introduced. Equivalence theory provides a reliable theoretical basis for translation. The thesis also analyzes the lexical, syntactical and stylistic characteristics of business contract. Under the guidance of equivalence theory, and based on the distinctive characteristics of contract, the thesis puts forwards the translation principles and applies examples with analysis to illustrate translation strategies from the lexical and syntactical perspectives and elementary requirements for translators are also put forward. Finally in conclusion, the author points out the limitations of the thesis and suggestions for further studies.
