Abstract/Summary:
Since the"cultural turn"in the late 1980s, more translation books and articles have been written from the angle of culture. Essentially, translation is a cultural exchange. With the increasingly close contact between countries, foreign affairs translation has undoubtedly become an important form of intercultural communication. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct foreign affairs translation research combined with the cultural elements.This thesis aims to probe into foreign affairs translation from the perspectives of cultural translation and intercultural communication studies. Its main content consists of three parts: firstly, based on a general introduction of foreign affairs translation and cultural elements respectively, with intercultural communication as a breakthrough point, the author puts forward the cultural perplexities that the translator and the interpreter are likely to face. Secondly, theoretically, as to foreign affairs translation, strategies and criteria of its cultural translation are elaborated, and then proceeds to the practice, aided with a host of examples, the author focuses on research and analysis of the cultural connotations and their translation involving the idiomatic phrases, euphemisms and taboo words, metaphors, and culture-specific expressions. Correspondingly, translation methods of practical worth are discussed at full length. Thirdly, by relating the intercultural communication with the context of globalization and on the foundation of relevant theory, the author puts forwards the current challenge and opportunity for foreign affairs translation, the required intercultural competence of the translator and the interpreter and the new roles they should play.It is the author's hope that the readers can rethink foreign affairs translation and its pivotal role in intercultural communication, to better understand and apply certain strategies, criteria and methods to the translation of cultural connotations, and more properly present the profundity and extensiveness of cultural connotations in foreign affairs translation, and worldwidely speaking, more effectively reconcile the interaction between cultural inheriting and cultural intermingling.
