With its absorption of nourishments from other types of arts, film, as a newly-integrated art, has actually become essential to modern people's life. Moreover, translating film subtitles has been generally accepted as a burgeoning industry and is being ever closely concerned by legion of scholars in the translators'community. Seen from its research status quo, it was due to language distribution peculiarities that western scholars had conducted film subtitle translation research much earlier and their initial pursuits can be dated back from the end of 1950s and the beginning of 1960s and hence they established certain standards and reached some common understanding on the issues of translation theory and strategies. However, the research done by China's scholars in this field is backward and their awareness of the importance of it is far from enough. Right now, the workers engaged in it are from different professions and their translation quality is at different levels, which have hindered the healthy development of this special domain.To make suggestions on improving the quality of film subtitle translation, this paper studies on English subtitle translation of the film Hero which directed by Zhang Yimou from the angle of Vermeer's Skopos theory. According to the Skopos rule in functional translation theory, the highest principle during translation is the aim of translation activity. Therefore, film subtitle translation is an activity of purpose. The main point of film subtitle translation is transfer relative information to the audience in unique culture background within constraints of time and space. By doing this the audience will understand and appreciate the film better, that will attract more audience to appreciate it. By doing so, more ticket profit will be achieved. To realize the purpose of film subtitle translation, the translator must pay attention to different culture phenomenon, meanwhile, follow the relative principle in translation practice and apply curtain strategies.Chapter 1 gives a general introduction of the background and the structure of the thesis, and then a literature review of film subtitle translation studies is given in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 states the theory basis and study methods to suppose the views of the paper. Chapter 4 analyzes the Skopos theory of the film Hero and strategies used in the subtitle translation. Chapter 5 draws the conclusion of this paper.
