Pointed Roofs, the first book chapter of Pilgrimage written by British woman novelist Dorothy Richardson at the beginning of 20th century, is acknowledged to be the first English stream of consciousness fiction. Since its emergence, critics have tried to analyze it from different perspectives, which can be roughly categorized as the following: the stream of consciousness method used in the novel, the heroine's ambiguous sexual identity, the feminine consciousness contained within it, and so on. The reason for the fiction to be recognized as the first English stream of consciousness lies not only in its innovation in content, but also innovation in style. However, most critics focus on analyzing the content of the fiction. As for the style, though people have noticed the stream of consciousness technique of the fiction and its special sentence structure, few of them have carried out any further study about that.Centering upon the theme of innovation, this thesis is written to analyze both the style and the content of the fiction. What's more, the final part of this project is dedicated to discussing the purpose and the significance of the author's innovation.
