As the culture of a region both has its stability and variability, the Wu culture presents a kind of special appearance of changing in the process of modernization. There is close relation between regional culture and literature. The culture develops unceasingly in the change, to a certain extent, the literary work reflects this kind of change. So it does between the Wu culture and Soochow writers'works. Living in the contemporary social culture environment, Soochow writers not only pay great attention to inherit the essence of traditional culture, but also inject new spirit of the age into themselves unceasingly, in order to achieve development within innovation and transformation. The special characteristics of the Wu culture impact on these writers, and on one hand, these writers'works reflect modernity of the Wu culture, on the other hand, they also bring some new quality to the Wu culture. This process shows how Soochow writers update the Wu culture from traditional to modern. This thesis pays attention to the modernity elements which these literary works present during the two-way and interactive process, along with the transformation and innovation of the Wu culture which reflected by them.This thesis focus on Lu Wenfu, Su Tong, and Fan Xiaoqing these three contemporary Soochow writers, carries on the analysis of their literary thought and works from the perspective of the Wu culture, in order to make some discussions to these Soochow writer's works, and open out the modern consciousness of the Wu culture. The main text is divided into three chapters, each chapter is around a writer of above to start on. The first chapter studies on Lu Wenfu's works, which is divided into four parts as follow: the perspective of ordinary people and the description of urban life; concerned about age and society, as well as reconsider about the Wu culture and its modernization; the spirit of intellectual modern realism; the ironical technique named"sweet and sour realism". The second chapter studies on Su Tong's works, which is divided into four parts as follow: "the Southern Spirit" and complicacy of the Wu culture; the New Historical novel and innovative consciousness; the modern performance of southern regional character; the modern consciousness which appeared with collision between ancient and modern, the Western and China. The third chapter studies on Fan Xiaoqing's works, which is divided into four parts as follow: the New Realistic novel and modernized evolution of the Wu culture; the representation of the cultural character of modern Soochow people; the reality of life and Buddhist realms; the modern transformation of narrative technique.
