In general, fluency of a language is determined by the amount of vocabulary the user can accurately understand and utilize. Vocabulary is usually the foundation of foreign language teaching, and mandarin is no exception. Even though mandarin has a large vocabulary, which made it impossible to teach everything in the classroom, it is still important to discuss the role of vocabulary in teaching mandarin, since it determines the scope of the syllabus.By using the korean textbook"chinese language I"as the subject, this paper performs a comparative study. It is divided in four parts: the introduction gives the background, the purpose and the definition of the study.The second part will focus on the korean textbooks, its history, and a statistical analysis on the amount of vocabulary used in the textbooks.The third part compares the vocabulary outline of the korean textbooks with the"mandarin vocabulary outline"The conclusion will suggest suitable textbooks to potential learners and provide suggestion for potential modification to existing textbooks.The author hopes that the study will provide a credible reference to the importance of vocabulary in the compiling chinese textbooks, and therefore improving the textbooks by making them more interesting and efficient to the learners.
