Jiang Guangqi was an activist during the beginning stage of revolutionary literature, he was the first writer to introduce revolutionary ideas to literature, and therefore has been praised as "the pioneer of revolutionary literature". Yet being a famous writer as such, he had been criticized by many through his life, some from his enemies, others from his comrades. The controversy over his writing has lasted to the present day, contemporary researchers still hasn't yet agree on a single opinion, an unusual situation in the literary world. However, the contribution of Jiang Guangci's works to revolution is undeniable. During the confusing time of "May 4" initiatory literature colliding with revolutionary literature, he was the one who opened up a possible way for new literature, pointing out the way for more enlightened young people to follow and bring it to a new stage. It could be seen from his text that Jiang Guangci had indeed followed his own views that were put out on some of his articles for the revolutionary literature--adding revolution and revolutionist's life to the range of literary subjects--making revolutionary literature the most popular style in its time. However, Jiang's wiring maybe deemed as simple, crude and lacking literary sophistication, as most of the other early revolutionary literature writers did. But at a time of historical transition when most people were silent, Jiang Guangci's "rude battle cry" had broken the stifling situation at the time. Moreover, Jiang Guangci not only initialized the revolutionary literature, but he also never stopped searching for the best way to write revolutionary literature. After "Lisa's sorrow", Jiang's writing had again revolutionized the popular yet static'revolutionary literature'on choosing subjects and writing techniques. This paper looks from the background and works of Jiang Guangci, studies his contribution and breakthrough to revolutionary literature, as well as finding out the reason why he could quickly took over the discourse power and led the change. This paper is divided into three parts:The first chapter summarizes the embarassment Jiang Guangci faced at the time he wrote. Contemporary assessment of his works, Jiang Guangci and Qian Xingcun's arguments for writing revolutionary literature. Also the overall development of research on Jiang Guangci's works from home and abroad after the founding of the republic, especially those that have particular significances. The second chapter discusses Jiang Guangci's exploration and innovation on writing. By focusing on Jiang Guangci's works, unscrambles the way he integrated revolution with his dream and his poem. Also how he rightly sensed the weak points of revolutionary literature, and began to write a different style of revolutionary literature novel such as "Lisa's Sorrow".The third chapter searches for the reasons for Jiang Guangci's works'popularity:by looking at the romanticism, hero complex that were typical of Jiang Guangci's works, the social situation and the demand from readers at the time, find out the reason for why Jiang Guangci's novel needed republished time and again, and has gained such strong social influence.
