Revolutionary literature is an important part of the history of modern Chinese literature. In the 1920s and 1930s,China faced domestic strife and foreign aggression. The future of our country affected the soul of a large number of intellectuals. They initiated and participated in the revolution and recorded revolutionary life and feelings in literary works,in which they sang praises to the heroes and disclosed the darkness.Among the great number of revolutionary literature writers who were active in the literary circles,Jiang Guangci can be regarded as a leading figure, while Mao Dun is a well-deserved mainstay.Jiang Guangci dedicated his short life to revolutionary literature. His works chanted slogans for the revolution and ignited the spirits of countless young people which promoted the flourish of the revolution;but meanwhile,he is also lonely and hard to be understood. The literary works of Jiang Guangci can be generally divided into two periods. The earlier works were full of high passion for the revolution with simple and idealized content;the later works highlighted the characters and gradually deepened the excavation of psychological consciousness with increased literary value.Mao Dun had unique insights on the turbulent revolutionary momentum. The drawbacks and darkness of current society leaded him to disappointment, pessimism and decadence. These emotions were detailed recorded in his works, thus he got severe criticisms from the radical revolutionaries in the literary circles. However,Mao Dun was still yearning for improving politics and promoting revolution,so he needed time to adjust his mood. Finally, through the creation of "Rainbow",his political aspirations were fully resurgent which indicated that Mao Dun stepped into a new stage of creation.According to the comparison of Jiang's novels in 1925-1932 with Mao's,their works could be divided into two categories from the perspective of the characters:the lower civilians and the knowledgeable youth. The plot development contains failure and revival, the complexity of revolution and love, and the style of writing shows the different tendencies of romance and reality.Faced with revolution and literature, the mentalities of the two writers in their works are unique and representative.Jiang Guangci is full of passion while Mao Dun is depressed in reality. Both of them are lonely and crazy, but with different dominant sides. The commonalities are the anxieties of identity given by the times. The split of identities is a common problem faced by that generation of writers.Compared and categorized with contemporary revolutionary writers,Hu Yepin,Hua Han,Ding Ling and Hong Lingfei,Jiang Guangci and Mao Dun just represents two different directions of development.Referring them to the same background and make discussion, their experience, works and the changes of their writing styles and creative psychology can demonstrate the contradictions and hard choices between the internal individual feelings and the external revolutionary reality of the writers from the point to the surface, thus we can explore the complexity and diversity of revolutionary literature history under comparison.
