As a member of female writers in 1930s, Chen Ying's novels represented a historical period of the contemporary female literary works, both in the techniques of characterization and narrative exploration, with the transitional nature from Ding Ling to Zhang Ailing. Chen Ying adhered to compose her works, which reflected and discussed women's liberation and the meaning of women's existence, from certain artistic standards and the female perspective, despite the characteristics of her era of which most writers dedicated their enthusiasm and energy on pursuing the subject of political ideology. This study, mainly focusing on Chen Ying's novels, analyzes the values of ideological contents and artistic characteristics of her works with the belief that:by combing and analyzing her novel system, we may get a better understanding of her works' functions as promotions of development of contemporary Chinese female literature, which will, in turn, shed light on Chinese female literature studies.Chapter I discusses factors which influence the characteristics of Chen Ying novels' formation. Mostly from a female perspective, Chen Ying's novels featured on sincere emotion, concise and smooth wording and marital stories which reflected women's fate. These features are closely linked to the writer's family environment, growing and educational experiences, and personal marriage life.Chapter II discusses connotations of Chen Ying's marriage novels. These novels deconstructed the traditional love myth as well as reproduced the conflict between the ideality and harsh reality of marriage. They, besides dispelling the consequences of the departure of "Nora", pondered on "how to do after Nora's leaving", paying sedulous attentions on women's subsistent state as well as exploring their survival mode and meaning. Compare to other novels with similar themes written in the same period, Chen Ying's novels, by putting people's thinking and feeling in the first place, displayed a broader social reality, which also avoided completely sinking into the conventional formula of "Revolution plus Love".Chapterâ…£analyzes ideological and artistic values of Chen Ying's novels. Her novels, through profound female consciousness, exploration of narrative techniques, represented high ideological and artistic values, which consequently made her an important transitional writer between Ding Ling and Zhang Ailing. |
