As we step into the second decade of the 21st century, our nation stresses more on quality-oriented education, the rearing of innovative talents. All these rely on some actual reform and transformation. According to some research, there has been about 2 billion English learners in China around 2002, which can be the world record with people of the same cultural background and mother tongue learning one foreign language. China has become a big nation of English education, but can it be a super power of English education? That remains a problem. We need to feel its vein and know its trend. What's more, faced with the expansion of the college scale and the explosion the the numbers of college students, and the spread of quality-oriented education, especially China's entry into WTO, there would be the call for new standards for producing talents. We need to deepen our reform of education and bring college undergraduate English specialty to a higher level. To reach such objectives, we should realize that in our education pattern, students should be encouraged to study with more practical means. Such idea does fit not only most science subjects, but also English education. In the past English education, students'study was not quite ideal, being shallow and narrow, let alone bringing up an amount of talents with solid professional ability. We owe this to students'passive learning. English education, like many other subjects, use spoon-feeding methods where students are imposed on some knowledge and their initiative cannot find its place. Most students have the problems of inability of using what they learn and consequently the lack of practical abilities. To improve practical abilities, they should practice from all aspects. And their practice should follow these principles---completeness, variety, interaction, linking and innovation. That is to say, only through practice, students can be fully activated, and they would seek information and knowledge, and think actively. Hence their study effect more profound and wider. All in all, the traditional English major curriculum aims at cultivating students using English as a tool, with the training of language skills as the main objective. However, such graduates can't meet the requirements of the current social development. Therefore, the English major curriculum will have to be reformed and the new cultivation objective should be the training of talents with a strong language ability, a thorough analysis of certain problems and some solutions. Learning through practice has these merits:to foster students'overall abilities, especially their practical and innovative quality, and their temperament as well. And it can fully motivate both the students and the teachers. Our study so far is so limited and preliminary, we expect to have more profound study and actual transformation of the teaching mold as we draw more experience in our work. The English learning-through-practice system, is a complete and overall system composed of all the major factors of practice. Its counterpart is the theoretical teaching system. Its previous level is the curriculum, and its lower level is experimental teaching system, social practice and internship etc. Its broader concept includes the objectives of learning through practice, the content of learning through practice, the administration of learning through practice and the supporting conditions for learning practice. Its narrow concept includes the actual content of teaching system, which based on the students training objectives, through effective design of curriculum and all sectors sets up the whole system of teaching. The features of language learning through practice are as follows:the variety of input and output, interaction, linkage and innovation. This paper would begin with the study of learning with practice, and then that in English education. And there will be some analysis on how to actually implement learning with practice throughout education both in macro and micro perspective. The so called macro aspect includes:the essence of English education, the scheme, the set-up of all courses, the factor of the teachers, the practice site, the administration system of teaching and learning, the teaching and learning assessment and some guarantee. The micro side would mainly be about the classroom teaching which is divided into outside class and inside class. How to motivate students to get rid of the old study mold and deepen their learning through practice. Meanwhile, some educators'educational notions related to such idea would also be mentioned so that we come up with new outlet and methods to our education. This paper includes five chapters. The first chapter introduces the significance of the study. Chapter two mainly discusses the characteristics of language practice and its requirements on teaching. Chapter three deals with the status quo of learning through practice. Chapter four mainly focuses on the reasons and causes of such status quo. And chapter five proposes some measures and strategies on the establishment of learning-through-practice system.
