In recent years, scholars have made different kinds of investigations on innovations in English teaching and learning for college students. They have made considerable achievements. But most of them mainly focused on the curriculum for English majors, or for non-English majors from Physics, Chemistry, or Chinese department or some other comparatively important departments. Few deep studies have been made on the English teaching and learning for sports majors in sport universities.The thesis mainly deals with the issues of solutions to the problems in English learning of sports majors in sport universities. The factors which influence their success or failure in English leaning are various, but the most important one is students themselves. It includes both intelligence and non-intelligence factors. The former are more complex, because college English is a compulsory course, which involves a large number of students whose intelligence disparity in language learning are different. We should teach students in accordance with their aptitude as far as possible though, by means of the scientific intelligence examination, dividing the different study community or grade and organizing grade teaching instead of the united educational model. This investigation on the students'present state of English learning in sport universities reflects many questions mainly related to student's non-intelligence factors, including environment, conditions, elementary knowledge, motive, demands, conception, manners, habit, strategies, difficulties and goals and so on. According to educational principles, we must fully consider the factor of students own who are the acceptors for teaching behavior or activities. At the same time, the factors of school and teacher also should be considered, which involve the demands for students, the curriculum standard, the conditions provided to the students whether or not conform to the market demands for talented person and students'demands and so on.The results indicated that in sport universities students have many problems in English learning. It mainly manifests that students have not great interests in English learning, and the motivation of study comes mainly from internal motive. Through analyzing students'choices for study materials, the utilization of study method, their arrangement of their spare time, the understanding degree of the teaching plans, the establishment of English learning programs and so on, it reflects that in sport universities students'independent capability in English learning is not strong; the automatic control ability is somewhat low; the self-consciousness of English learning is poor; the extracurricular study time is insufficient; their study strategies and ways are insufficiently diverse; their study manner is quite passive; the class atmosphere is quite dull; most students are lack of initiative and durability in English learning, seldom reconsidering their own study situation; the effect in English learning is not ideal; the scope of ability enhancement in actual English-applying is not obvious. In English teaching, there are also some various problems in teaching materials, teaching methods, teaching devices and teaching evaluation and so on. According to the present state of English curriculum teaching and learning in sport universities, this thesis proposes countermeasures and suggestions to solve the questions, which including the revision and refinement of instruction programs, the adjustment to English teaching materials, the improvement of English teaching methods, the refinement of English teaching system, the implementation of graduation teaching and so on.The thesis aims at seeking the effective teaching countermeasures and solutions via the real diagnosis research, which may provide some train of thought for the educational reform of university non-English majors, and can play certain promotional part, especially can help the sport universities improve English teaching, enhance English teaching effect, promote students to learn English well, and foster them to be multi-skilled talented person to adapt to the development of our country and society.
